Feelin' some kinda way

Rain, rain go away come again another day.

That phrase is potentially going to sum up my entire study abroad trip in London. In the States, I'd probably find myself saying that a couple of times a month but here, it's practically everyday! Days like yesterday catch me by surprise. You know, the days where the weather is fairly decent on your way to work, school/class, cinema, wherever but upon departure, the rain sneaks up on you and you're without an umbrella? Yeah, that was yesterday for me. The weather has always been a pretty standard way of depicting my mood. In this case, rain causes me to be sluggish, lazy, miserable and sleepy. Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely despise travelling in the rain. Because I had already gone to class in decent weather and was surprised by the rain afterward, I figured what the hey? There, I decided to be completely uninhibited and treat myself to a mini shopping spree -- my first since I've been here. This is quite baffling for me because I have the most whirlwind relationship with fashion and a love affair for shopping. Whenever I have money to spend, it burns a hole in my hand, pocket, wallet, mom's pocket, wherever! Bad. I know. But I am completely surprised - not to mention proud - of myself for waiting three weeks into the program (and in the British hub for fashion) to shop. Anyone who's anyone who knows anything about London knows that Oxford Street is laced with shopping for men, women and kids from accessories to shoes and even food! Here's my sort of "review" for the stores that I visited.

Where to: Oxford Circus.

First up, Schuh. Pronounced "shoe", this place is the UK's largest shoe shop and it is agreed by the dozens of shoe addicted women (and men). I walked into what appeared to be a shoe frenzy. There were plenty of patrons oogling shoes and dozens more hunting down sales associates requesting a particular shoe in their size. The associates seemed to be going in and out of the stock room as if it were a revolving door and coming back with heaps of shoes. This store has a pretty wide selection from a low heel for the fashionable working woman or Vans and Converses for the skateboarder in you. Whatever your taste may be, this store has it. The price range is relatively bearable. You may run into a few pricey items but if there is room in your budget, don't be afraid to live a little, invest and treat yourself to a nice pair. Though it isn't shoe heaven, you are most likely to find at least a pair that you'd be willing to purchase on the spot. Total spending here: £119.99 for two pairs of boots.

Directly next door: Office.

Office is another place for shoe lovers. It's relatively smaller than Schuh and is more intimate. There isn't much of a difference in shoe styles but there is more focus on boots and heels and less on casual shoes. I'm not a huge shoe shopper and always dread having to buy a new pair but I gave this shop a fighting chance. I tried on a few pairs and walked away with a cute pair of ankle boots. I also took a risk with the color choice since I normally stick to black or brown. I happened to walk away with a taupe color pair. Shoes will be shoes and the price will always remain constant, in my opinion. Therefore, you won't be shocked by the amount of money you will wind up spending. On the plus side, this shop also offers a 10% discount for students. Total spending here: £58.50 for a pair of boots.

Next up, Uniqlo.

I must say that the window display is appealing from the curb with its merry-go-round of mannequins. This store is for the simplicity in you. I, for one, am very attracted to solid colors and though it could be a little bland, the trick is playing up the solids with some cool patterns and accessories. Here, you can find some really key pieces to everyday outfits: solid v and crew neck tops for a steal (2 for £11.99 - limited offer of course but regularly priced at about £10), mounds of colorful skinny jeans, blue denim, cardigans, and flannels. There's also a section for the businesswoman. Here, she can find simple dresses, trench coats, and blazers. Items in this store are extremely reasonably priced. Jeans will run you about £15 and the store even offers an alteration service, sometimes free of charge. Total spending here: £31.98 for a thick, belted, cardigan sweater and two longed sleeve v-neck tops.

Neext. Bik Bok.

Perhaps what attracted me to the store was the name. It's a quaint two floor boutique with a little bit of everything. Similarly to Uniqlo, this store has numerous key pieces but in addition, you can also find floral prints. I almost missed out a few hidden treats in the lower portion of the store. Items were marked off by 50% and if you were lucky, 75%. This is another good store to visit if you're on a budget but still would like to have the latest looks. Oh, and if you're a student, you can get a 10% discount by showing your NUS card or proper identification. Bonus! My total spending here: £39.77 for three tops, a skirt, and a dress.

Lastly, H&M.

Well, H&M is widely known and for that reason I told myself that I wouldn't shop at a store that is accessible in the states but I took a peek anyway. This two level H&M has everything from ruffles to corsets. It doesn't leave much room for individuality because it is very popular and the pieces are very distinct but there are some pieces that are worth adding to your wardrobe. I was pretty pleased with the skirt that I purchased so I got it in two colors: black and grey. It is a simple, form fitting, spandex-cotton blend, pencil skirt that is really versatile in any situation. I could easily wear a nice, fitting top with a blazer or vest, simple necklace and a nice pair of boots (ankle or calf) to work or I could jazz it up with a ruffle top (my favorite) and heels for a night at a club. The price range is completely manageable and is heaven for the chic chick in you. Total spending: £5.98 on two skirts

Your fashion passport has officially been stamped for today. Today's stamp, an amazing pair of Louboutins. Hope you love! Ciao, my fashionistas!

Cupid's Day

Globally, many couples will be celebrating Valentine's Day. There will be dozens of dozen roses purchased from street vendors, regurgitated Hallmark cards from CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreen's, etc, swapped between lovers and boxes and boxes of chocolates rummaged about. My first Valentine's Day with a true valentine and what happens? I'm halfway around the world. Though I am having fun here in London, I am many miles away from the one who completes me and it is a bit tough to deal with. It isn't much easier when there is so much love in the air, couples cuddling, holding hands and eating at the most romantic restaurants throughout the city. I must admit, I am a tad jealous and bitter because I am unable to experience that with my man but at least I have one, right? But to be honest, I completely lost track of the days and was reminded two days ago.

To start off Valentine's weekend, I went to a jazz cafe where the Ronny Jordan Trio performed live jazz music at the Jazz Cafe. We were rewarded with a small and unexpected treat from Grammy award winning musician, George Benson. He sang a little blues for us and it was absolutely fantastic! It was well worth the two hour wait, £1.50 cloakroom charge, sore feet and pained lower back! I knew that I appreciated the arts but not like this. It was the most sensational and freeing feeling to just feel the music and allow it to speak for itself. That's what music is about.

Though the music was perfect, my eyes roamed the room numerous times and spotted couple after couple after couple and found myself allowing Cupid's love to become my misery. Women were being held, comforted, loved and appreciated by their significant others and me, well, not so much. I miss him and I can't help it.

We argue almost everyday but we come to an agreement by the end of it all and it's as if it never happened. I love him. I love him a lot. So I'd like to dedicate this blog to him. Teddy graham -- I know you hate that name but I love it -- Happy Valentine's Day. I cook for you because I want you to be content. I worry about you because care about your well being. I become possessive because I'm selfish and want you to be mine and only mine. I give you hell because I love you. Sometimes I can be a complete ass and irrational but you are always so loving and forgiving and for that, I love you more than words can explain.

Who studies during their study abroad?

I must say that studying abroad feels like a huge vacation and I'm finding it challenging to balance classes and life. I'm miles away from my better half and while Skype has been the greatest invention, nothing can compare to his warm embrace. For now, I am trying to occupy myself with classes and UK rendezvous. The week was pretty easy since I only had two classes, one on Monday and the other, Tuesday. The rest of the week was mine for the taking!

On Sunday, Bethany, one of my roommates, and I made plans to go to a spot called Madame JoJos. Due to inadequate directions, we walked Piccadilly Circus and never found this Madame Jojo woman or place. However, we were bombarded with nightclub promoters left and right and quickly had an alternative. After listening to this guy's spiel, we decided that Oxygen would be blessed by our presence and awesome dance moves that night. As quickly as our excitement built, it came to a screeching halt in the same manner. Our promoter had made the awful mistake of walking us to the nightclub door as opposed pitching us the club details, granting us entry, and leaving us be. Because of that, we were in the middle of an argument between the promoter and boss man and wound up almost being rejected at the door after paying our £5 cover charge. But no fear, we got in. Four shots and an hour later, Bethany and I were whining our waists to some reggaeton beats, fist pumping - courtesy to the Jersey Shore douche bags, and rapping lyrics to Kanye West. We were having a blast and here was when we met Matt and his friend whose name I didn't quite get. West's "Golddigger" seemed to unite us all as we rapped and dapped each other up. The night got a little creepy as I called myself being social. I thought it would be a good idea to dance with a couple of Middle Eastern men until I was pinned between one of them and a stripper pole. Yikes.

Wednesday night, I saw a play by Anton Chekhov, entitled Three Sisters for my theatre course. It was pretty depressing but to combat my theatrical depression, I found myself shaking a tail feather at a night club called Penthouse directly after. Seven floors high and an hour later, I was so over this place. The DJ was bland and the ratio of women to men was 3:1 which meant no British hotties for me. Overall, I was disappointed in the nightclub but that would not be the last time that I'd party in Leicester Square or Piccadilly Circus!

The weekend was finally here and Saturday was the night. As promised, I found my way back to Leicester Square, not too far from Oxygen. I tubed with my favorite ladies: Bethany, Emily and Joelle to Zoo Bar Nightclub. We were on the guestlist and that meant no cover charge which is always amazing. We all looked pretty sexy that night and the guys in the club agreed. As soon as we stepped foot on the dance floor, Bethany and Emily were immediately snatched by two Brits and Joelle and I were left wondering where they were being whisked to. We agreed that they couldn't go very far and proceeded to dance with one another as everyone watched us. We spotted two men eying us and decided to dance with them. Later, I found out that I was dancing with Mauro (pronounced Mah-ooh-row) from a small island in Italy. We danced for a fairly good amount of time and clearly he was interested. Before things got further, the fantab four were reunited once and again and we were back in action. Though the music was bumping and the vibe was right, it was almost time to go. Mauro and I exchanged numbers and right before I walked off of the dance floor, I was stopped by another man who called me "beautiful" in the sweetest accent -- and of course he was Italian as well. I stored his number in my phone and we were headed back to good ol' Baker Street!

Sadly, Monday is near and our (me and my weekend's) honeymoon is over. Until we meet again in four days, I bid you farewell...
